Wow, congratulations!

I was going to buy FAZ and GLD first thing this morning but our area had a power outage that lasted for about 4 hours today and by the time I could have executed the trades the window was gone. Pits!

But one thing about this market - - there will be other chances to bet that things will get worse.

Thanks Lady. There is a big old gap in the S&P. I can see the market dropping another day or two, but that gap near the wedge break may be a target for any relief rally later in the week.

Good idea on the extended weakness. What are you looking for, a move up to that gap around $7?

I actually hate the chart on this puppy as oil looks pathetic. But I am playing this as play on a potential snap-back rally in stocks - possibly before the end of this options expiration week, or next week. Oil could run up 15% to 20% in no time, and this ultra ETF would really benefit. And yes, there is a big gap near 7.40.

I won't thank show-me yet for the heads up on this one, but hopefully next week we will be high fiving each other. :)

Oh, I know. DXO was a bust, I'm glad I took my money and ran from that when I did. UCO is a better option, though I like the prospects for UGA here sitting on support at 20.

By the way, at Lady's suggestion:

UCO = Ultra ProShare, 2X the Dow Jones AIG Crude Oil Sub-Index (DJAIGCL)

Oil could run up 15% to 20% in no time, and this ultra ETF would really benefit.
OK, maybe I was wrong. Oil was up 12.3% today, and UCO was up "just" 11.5%. I know Exxon was downgraded today, so perhaps that is why DJAIGCL was only up about 6.5%.

UCO is up 14.86% and DXO is up 11.97% but they track different oils. Dxo tracks West Texas Crude and the other I am not sure.

Is an afternoon reversal and some follow-though on Monday too much to ask? S&P now 754, Dow down 200+.

etftalk
02-20-2009, 06:51 PM
If the market looks like it is going to close green, I will add some FAS to my SPY position before the close, looking for follow thru on Monday. It must be green just before 4 PM, however, otherwise I'll stick with just the SPY position.

Nice rally in oil this afternoon, also.

etftalk
02-22-2009, 04:02 PM
With the S&P down over 1% at the close, I did not add to the long position. Still holding just SPY.

I do see a snap back rally as a good possibility this week, but I must say I am a bit less confident after I received Trader Fred's signals for Tuesday (trade made COB Monday). I get them in advance. :toung: I will post it on the site after 12 noon ET Monday. It surprised me.

etftalk
02-23-2009, 06:43 PM
My SPY position is down a modest 0.35 and I am a little torn. I can't help but continue to believe we are going to see a snap back rally, but Trader issues a buy signal on SDS (2 x S&P short) at the close of business today. Sheesh! Sounds like a break of support. I should probably take my small loss and be done with it.

Fred's signals are not always accurate to the day so maybe I will get lucky enough to get a late afternoon rally today, and carry into tomorrow before the selling continues.

I hate when I have to use the word "lucky".

etftalk
02-23-2009, 10:37 PM
Well, luck didn't work. The SPY position is now down 1.65 or 2%. Bad, but not horrible. I knew there was a reason I didn't buy SSO or FAS on Friday.

Still holding but quite worried because of Fred's SDS (2X short S&P) buy signal for Tuesday.

Also, still long UCO from 5.95. Closed today @ 6.22.

Here's a newbie question. :embarrest: When you move your stop does it cost you an additional commission? I know you pay a commission when you buy or when you sell. But do you pay a commission to set a stop or to change a stop?

I'm so embarrassed to even have to ask this question.

Note to self - This is the type of trade that I SHOULD NOT be making. Playing the long side here is very risky. The trend is down, the market is weak, and we could see an all out puking in stocks (capitulation), and this trade is nothing more than a gamble. Now stop it! :)

I am actually slightly in the green on this one, but here's where I pray asking the powers that be, if you get me out of this trade unscathed, I'll never do it again (but that would probably be a lie). :D

You probably did that trade for the same reason I did TNA. It's a bollinger band crash trade and we're expecting a dead cat bounce that we will be watching like a hawk (if I may mix my metaphors :toung:) and we'll sell the minute we clear our commission and a hair more. How was my guess?

BTW, speaking of capitulation, Ira's video today he said when the market goes back up after this one he expects that a bottom may finally be in.

This may be a moot point by the close, but the SSO trade I made, buying after hours yesterday, and selling premarket today, worked out because you can actually get some good fills pre/post market close as emotions run high, and shares are thinly traded.

I sold SSO at 16.27 at about 8:20 AM ET (I had to set my alarm because that's 6:20 AM my time ) and a half hour into "real" trading, the high on SSO is just 16.21.

So, if you are trying to get in or out of a position, try throwing a "best case" limit order out there in the after / pre hours trading. You may be surprised.

Still holding on to AGQ (ultra silver) as well, which is getting a 2nd day of bounce today. The silver chart still looks "OK".

I have not covered. I saw the gap in the S&P get filled and took a shot. As much as many think this market is ready to rock and roll, I see the end of this rally being very soon - with perhaps today or tomorrow being the high of the bounce.

If I'm wrong, I'll know soon enough. :)

I agree. I don't understand the strength of this rally. All the government intervention and hype sure pumped the market up. It is almost like people are taking the word of the government that the recession is over. I just can't wait until earning come out....that should be a real eye opener. Looks like the most recent relevant gaps have been filled on the downside and upside along with a higher low in a definitive uptrend. With the Dollar leaning on support there could be a huge move coming soon on a break.

It had been 1803 earlier on Sunday evening so I shouldn't have been so greedy. The chart was looking @ at 1803 as a good place to buy, but since it already hit it, I should have just bought at 1806.

It's hitting a 5+ month high today. I usually like to buy the breakouts rather than sell, but I will give UNG a couple of days, because as I said, it seems to like to jerk the gains out from under us to get us leaning the wrong way. You can see that in the charts above.

After some lackluster trades in UNG and up and downs in silver and silver short trades, I have been a little quiet. I have been trading SSO mostly, and some AAPL, URBN (recent breakout) and LVLT (wild little bugger). Nothing special.

I am considering looking into oil ETF's "just in case" but that is probably a sign that we've hit a top. I've seen USO, OIL, and FOL (new 2X oil ETF). Are there any others out there worth looking into?

etftalk

I never did pull the trigger on an oil ETF, but have been heavily in and out of SSO and TNA.

Also gambled on the new Chinese security software company's IPO. The initial price was targeted at 10.50 - 11.50. Then it was raised closer to $14. By the time it opened to the public on Wednesady, it opened up close to $30. It moved all the way over $35 during that first day of trading but pulled back on day 2 back below $30. I grabbed some at $29.19 just before the close on Thursday. It's back over $30 but moving up and down pretty quickly.

Expensive, yes, but it does move percentage-wise very well like NFLX, AAPL, GOOG, etc.

I'm embarrassed to say I got this from Cramer a couple of weeks ago. I have lost a lot of money on stocks listening to him, but I took a look and loved the chart. We'll see. I've been in since about 272 (now 282) and it seems investors are buying this on the dips. It's nice to be in the leaders. :)

If you are looking for something less exensive, highly traded, nicely volatile, but some potential - take a look at LVLT. It has been coming alive lately and made a new high the other day. It seems to be digesting some recent gains and there is a gap that may need to get filled, but it looks like there is interest out there again.

I have been in and out several times because I don't know about the investment side of the story - just the trading side. It used to be a $120 + stock once upon a time. I'll be happy if it hits $2 or $3. :)

I thought about pulling out too, but didn't get there. My threshold for overall loss is 1% (I'm only 45% into S and I combined in TSP at the moment, have been for a few weeks). I hit the 1% drop from the top today.

Only things comforting me at the moment is that big ol' springtail, and knowing that Sentiment Signal said Buy, and Moosignal is still holding IWM this week. Those are what helped me not pull the plug today-but if it gets worse (I'm watching candle charts and everythng else at the moment), I'm lightening up by half at least.

The buying during the latter part of the day forced me to buy a little near the close incase we saw a pop at today's open. So I decided to get something less volatile and more "industrial". I bought some CAT. An old dog with a great chart and a nice pullback.
